F. Sionil Jose Young Writers Award

F.SIONIL JOSE YOUNG WRITERS AWARD

The F. Sionil Jose Young Writers Award is to honor our father's legacy to the young writers of the Philippines. It seeks to advance excellence, integrity, social justice and the expression of love of country in literature. It is also to honor our mother's devotion to nurturing both our father's well-being and his art. We thank the Philippine PEN Center for their assistance in coordinating this Award.

Requirements:

  • Age requirement: 30 years and younger
  • Nationality: Filipino Citizen residing in the Philippines
  • Literary Style: Short story written in English
  • Author does not need to be a member of PEN.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Submit one unpublished short story written in English.
  • Deadline: must be received by Solidaridad by August 30, 2015
    Email submission as attachment to solifsj@yahoo.com or send 4 copies to Solidaridad Bookshop, 531 Padre Faura, Ermita, Manila
  • Short story must be limited to 20 pages, double space, 12-font type
  • Cover page (one page only) must include the following information: name, date of birth, address, telephone number,email, date of submission,title of short story, and a brief biography of author's background

Award:

  • First Prize - P50,000.00
  • Second Prize – P30,000.00
  • Third Prize – P20,000.00

Winning entries will be published in the Philippine PEN journal. Award will be presented by October 31, 2015 during the 50th anniversary celebration of Solidaridad Bookshop.

Selection Committee:

Selection Committee will be made up of three PEN Members--the PEN Secretary and two PEN members. F. Sionil Jose will oversee selection of the Committee and serve as a non-voting ex-oficio member. One of the Jose children may also participate in the selection process. Authors' names will not be included during the reading by the Selection Committee. An hononarium of P5,000.00 will be given to each judge.

This Award is funded by the Jose children--Tonet Jose, Evelina Jose Cichy, Brigida J. Bergkamp, Eddie Jose, Eugene Jose, Alex Jose and Nikko Jose.
