8th Jagna International Workshop:
Structure, Function and Dynamics from nm to Gm

January 4 – 7, 2017
Jagna, Bohol 6308, Philippines

Novel cross-disciplinary perspectives are currently being explored to better understand complexities of and connections between structure, function and dynamics of physical systems ranging from submicroscopic biomolecules up to large-scale atmospheric and interstellar disturbances. Investigations at the mathematical, experimental, and computational levels are vital to widen the spectrum of real-world applications in health and environmental sciences, geophysical forecasting, materials sciences and engineering, as well as complex socio-economic dynamics. This Workshop shall then be a forum for discussion of novel vis-à-vis standard approaches, challenges, recent breakthroughs and open questions in the analysis of micro/macro-scale classical and quantum physical systems, and biological systems including units, clusters, and swarms.

The Workshop is the 8th in a series organized by the Research Center for Theoretical Physics (RCTP). The informal nature of the Workshop series is meant to foster active interaction among speakers and participants, and to encourage graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to get insights from invited lecturers so that viable research targets could be clearly defined.

WORKSHOP SITE

The Research Center for Theoretical Physics (RCTP) is located in the small coastal town of
Jagna in the southern part of the island province of Bohol. Situated in the Central Visayas Region of
the Philippines, this island is known for its white beaches, snorkeling and diving sites, the tarsier, Chocolate Hills, scenic rivers, as well as its diverse cultural and historical heritage. The town of Jagna has a port which connects it to several neighboring provinces by sea. Jagna is 63 km (1hr-15min-drive) from Tagbilaran, the capital of Bohol. Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and Air Asia offer daily direct flights from Manila to Tagbilaran. Aside from Manila, Cebu City in the neighboring island is also an international gateway city. Ocean Jet and SuperCat have several modern ferries plying the interisland route from Cebu to Tagbilaran, the journey taking around two hours.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

The scientific sessions of the Workshop will be from 4 to 7 January 2017, with a day allotted to see some sites in Bohol. There will be presentation of recent research results through lectures and a poster session, as well as review and pedagogical talks with graduate students and young Ph.D.’s as the target audience.

PARTICIPATION

Applications for participation should be sent to Prof. Cristine Villagonzalo at the latest by 22
November 2016. Register online through bit.ly/2dZJ4oh. Contributed papers and extended abstracts for posters are welcome but must be communicated to the organizers by 22 November 2016 for review.

WORKSHOP FEE

The Workshop fee of US$ 120 (foreign) or PhP 5,000 (local) covers registration, materials, lunch and refreshments during coffee breaks for 3 days of scientific sessions. Partial financial support may be granted depending on available funds.

WORKSHOP PROCEEDINGS

Arrangements will be undertaken for a printed copy and on-line publication of the Proceedings of the Workshop. Instructions to contributors on the preparation and submission of camera-ready manuscripts will be given once these are finalized.

ACCOMMODATION

Participants may directly contact lodging places near the workshop venue. A Google search can yield a number of resort-hotels and pension houses in Bohol. Room rates per night range from US$25 to US$70. Upscale resort-hotels (over US$ 200) are around a half-hour or more by car from the venue. Note that reservations should be done early since Bohol’s beaches and dive sites are attractive to tourists and January is part of the peak season.

PRE/POST-WORKSHOP ARRANGEMENTS

Reservations and arrangements can be facilitated by the organizers for those who plan an extended stay before or after the Workshop, either for leisure, seminars and discussion sessions, or public lectures for secondary school teachers and students.

Popular beach resorts and PADI dive centers are on Panglao Island (18 km southwest of Tagbilaran) and in the peninsular town of Anda (90 km east of Tagbilaran, or 27 km east of Jagna).
