MSU-IIT CASS hosts YACAPayapaan Summit, a US-Embassy Funded Extension Program

As part of its continuing efforts to help rebuild Marawi and ensure the sustainability, inclusiveness and, success of peacebuilding efforts in Mindanao, the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) will be hosting the YACAPayapaan Summit on June 23, 2018 at the CASSalida Theater, CASS, MSU-IIT.

 The summit marks the culmination of Project YACAP (Youth Amplifying, Co-creating, and Advocating Peace), an extension program of the College and one of 37 US-Government Alumni-led projects funded by the US Embassy in Manila through its #ForMindanao campaign.

 Project YACAP is a leadership development program which gathered 27 youth participants who were directly or indirectly affected by the Marawi Siege as well as eight young professionals who served as their mentors. It sought to provide a space where youth participants could amplify stories of peace, a platform through which they could co-create peacebuilding initiatives, and a network through which they could sustain engagements and continue advocating for peace.

 The program took off in February with a three-day seminar-workshop on Amplifying, Co-creating, and Advocating Peace. It involved conversations on youth peace narratives; plenary sessions on Youth Radicalism, Religion and Violence, and the Role of the Youth in Peacebuilding; and workshops on tools for building a culture of peace as well as on project ideation and pitching.

 Youth participants were then given four months to develop and implement peace projects involving the youth in their respective communities.

 These initiatives will be highlighted during the YACAPayapaan Summit as participants share their stories and learn from each other’s experiences.
