A ceremony for the conferment of the Professor Emeritus title to retired professor, Dr. Cesar G. Demayo from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), was held today, January 20, 2025, at the PRISM Lecture Hall. The ceremony was witnessed and attended by the University Chancellor, Alizedney M. Ditucalan, University officials, CSM dean, department chairpersons, faculty, and students.
Approved during the 269th èßäAVBoard of Regents meeting held last year, Dr. Demayo’s conferment is a testament to his significant efforts and legacy to scientific research, academic mentorship, and leadership. This also magnifies the exemplary contributions of retired faculty members coming from CSM, as he is already the third from the college to be awarded with the prestigious title.
The Professor Emeritus title is given to retired faculty members who have contributed to the growth and success of the University in their respective fields. A symbol of excellence and legacy, this award, according to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Pamela Resurreccion, is rooted in the history and vision of the institution.
“This title represents the enduring roots and flourishing branches of the academic community we strive to nurture,” the Vice Chancellor said.
Serving the University for more than 35 years, Dr. Demayo has brought outstanding contributions in the field of genetics and entomology, especially in the field of research where he has numerous publications in scopus-indexed journals. He was also the former director of the Center for Integrative Health and former department chairperson of the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) where during his term, DBS retained its status as a Center of Excellence, the Marine Science program was designated as a Center of Development, and scholarships were made available for the MS Environmental Science program.
As stated by Dr. Jan Mickelle V. Maratas in his opening remarks, Dr. Demayo is a “seasoned professional whose pursuit for knowledge is a life-long task.”
Chancellor Ditucalan expressed his congratulations to the honoree and emphasized the privileges that come with the title such as remaining active in teaching, securing research grants, attending conferences, and advancing the University’s academic mission.
“Throughout the years, Professor Demayo has embodied the essence of what it means to be a dedicated educator, a passionate researcher, and an inspiring mentor to his students,” the Chancellor said, who led in the conferring of the honoree.
In his response and acceptance speech, Dr. Demayo shared that this award was meaningful to him and gave a heartfelt contemplation on whether or not he deserved the title, candidly reflecting on his personal and professional journey. With a humorous and sentimental retrospection, he spoke of the challenges and triumphs that shaped his career, expressing deep gratitude to the people and experiences that defined his path. Ultimately, the honoree concluded that his commitment to doing more for the University only remains stronger.
With a touch of humor directed at the Chancellor, Dr. Demayo quipped, “I may have retired, but I am not tired.”
