MSU-IIT, SNSU conduct Capability Development Training Workshop on Futures Thinking; produce eight research proposal drafts

Mar 03 2024

Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) conducted a three-day workshop on capacity development titled "Embracing Futures Thinking: Charting the Digitalization of SNSU through Research CapDev Initiatives (ICT Research CapDev Seminar-Workshop). The workshop was facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Orven E. Llantos, PhD, faculty of the Computer Science Department of the College of Computer Studies.

The capacity development workshop, which was one of the commitments stipulated in the Memorandum of Agreement jointly signed by both institutions, took place at SNSU Del Carmen Campus in Surigao del Norte, from February 29 to March 2, 2024.

The workshop garnered active participation from various SNSU ICT-related departments across different satellite campuses. Its primary objective was to guide participants in developing research proposals using Futures Thinking tools. These proposals were strategically aligned with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals and the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Harmonized National R&D Agenda in ICT-related topics.

Key components of the workshop included a comprehensive lecture on enhancing literature reviews using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) frameworks. This approach aimed to facilitate a thorough understanding of the subject matter and effectively address research gaps. Additionally, participants delved into discussions on research management tools, aiding them in identifying suitable publication venues while steering clear of predatory journals.

As a result of this collaborative effort, the workshop yielded eight draft proposals. These proposals are intended for submission to both the DOST and SNSU's internal research office, seeking potential funding opportunities. This proactive approach is anticipated to enhance SNSU's research output significantly.

Dr. Romy Jun A. Sunico, the SNSU’s Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension, expressed appreciation for the participants' outputs and committed his support through conducting internal reviews to ensure the quality of proposals emerging from SNSU.
