Three faculty members of the College of Economics,  Business and Accountancy (CEBA) participated in the recently concluded Technology Commercialization Mentorship Series (TCMS) of the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research & Development (DOST-PCAARRD) held at the University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato City (USM-KCC) on April 18, 2024.

The mentorship series was participated by 39 State Universities and Colleges and Research and Development Institutions in the Philippines.

MSU-IIT was represented by three faculty members of the College of Economics,  Business and Accountancy (CEBA)– Asst. Prof. Charlyn Capulong  (Department of Economics), Asst. Prof. Donnavic A.  Dumapias (Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management) and Assoc. Prof. Stephen C. Fajardo (Department of Business and Innovation) who completed the mentorship series together with 102 other participants from Regions II, III, VII, IX, X, XII.

The mentorship series on TMCS is comprised of five modules which are Module 1: Overview of the Agri-Aqua Innovation System; Module 2: Understanding the Market, highlighting the importance of identifying an entity's target market; Module 3: Pre-Commercialization Services, tackling commercialization strategies, how spin-offs work, and other commercialization-related matters; Module 4: Technology Valuation, Utilizing Cost Method, Market and Income Method of Valuation; and Module 5: Negotiation & Licensing,  where participants were taught how to develop royalties and licensing agreements. Actual technology negotiations took place on USM where participants also had their graduation ceremony.

The TMCS is part of the five capacity building project of  DOST–PCAARRD under the  Regional Agri-aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Program where the Institute participated in Project 1A entitled Establishment of the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) in MSU-IIT headed by Assoc. Prof. Stephen C. Fajardo.

The active involvement of CEBA in the DOST-PCAARD’s TCMS not only facilitated learning on crucial topics such as negotiation, licensing, and technology commercialization but also fostered collaboration and knowledge-sharing among institutions across the Philippines. The insights gained from this experience will enhance contributions to technology commercialization and innovation in the University.
