MSU-IIT CHS conducts Qualitative Research Methods Workshop for Faculty

Faculty members of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Iligan Medical Center College (IMCC), St. Michael’s College (SMC) College of Nursing, and Adventist Medical Center (AMCC) School of Nursing recently participated in a Qualitative Research Methods Workshop on July 30-31, 2024 held at the CHS Hall, MSU-IIT, Iligan City.

Hosted by MSU-IIT, the two-day event was made possible through efforts and collaboration with the College of Nursing, Silliman University (CON, SU), Dr. Luz Sobong Porter, Center of Leadership Excellence in Nursing, and Metro Pacific Health (MPH).

The two-day workshop was conducted to augment the Qualitative Research skills of participants through the utilization of Digital Tools for Data Analysis, enhanced methodological skills, and effective implementation of standardized approaches and techniques.

Dr. Evalyn E. Abalos, Center of Leadership Excellence in Nursing (CoLEN) Co-Director, CON, SU and Dr. Chanell Jan C. Concepcion, Head, Nursing Education and Training, MPH were the distinguished resource persons during the event.

The event’s first day commenced with words of welcome from CHS Dean Dr. Abdullah Junior S. Mangarun and the giving of Rationale by CHS Research Coordinator, Dr. Gloria Shiela E. Coyoca.

This was then followed by the active engagement of faculty members in intensive discussions on topics covering Research Paradigms, a two-part session about Qualitative Research Traditions and Methodologies, Data Analysis, and the use of Digital Tools for Data Analysis (MS Office and NVivo).

The second day’s sessions focused on the topics of Publishing in Qualitative Nursing Journals and Writing Qualitative Research Proposals, and were highlighted by interactive activities and group work on writing a Concept Paper and the presentation of group outputs for critiquing and quality feedback.

A total of 13.5 approved Credit Units were awarded to participants upon completion of the workshop relevant to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for nurses.

Facilitating and organizing such activities for faculty members highlights MSU-IIT's strong commitment to research and innovation, academic excellence, and sustainable development, in making a positive impact on society, and influencing the future.
