MSU-IIT EM program welcomes metallurgist from Australia for lecture on mine and mill optimization

Jan 21 2025

The Mining Engineering (EM) program of MSU-IIT welcomed and hosted Dr. Germán Figueroa of CSA Metals Acquisition Limited in Cobar, NSW, Australia for a lecture on the "Optimization of Mine and Mill Operations" on January 17, 2025, at the COE Conference Hall.

Dr. Figueroa is a highly experienced metallurgist with over 12 years of expertise in both site-based operations and research, specializing in process mineralogy and metallurgical plant optimization. Holding a degree in Geology, he finished his Ph.D. in Extractive Metallurgy from the University of Queensland in Australia, where his research focused on cell hydrodynamics, turbulence measurements, and flotation modeling.

During the lecture, Dr. Figueroa shared his in-depth technical knowledge of the optimization of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills, specifically using grindcurves to develop model-supported guidelines for mill optimization processes.

His presentation was met with great enthusiasm and interest by the attendees, who appreciated his practical insights and contributions to the field. He also emphasized the critical role of geometallurgy in optimizing mine operations, ensuring maximum material recovery from the planning stage through execution resulting in more efficient and effective mining processes.

Earlier that day, Dr. Figueroa, along with the faculty from the Department of Materials and Resources Engineering & Technology (DMRET), met with the University Chancellor, Alizedney M. Ditucalan, to discuss the importance of inviting industry professionals to academic discussions. They highlighted how such engagements inspire students and provide valuable insights that extend beyond theoretical knowledge, bridging the gap between academia and real-world applications.
