To radiate love within the University on Valentine’s Day, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Services (OVCSS) and the Center for Learning and Academic Support Services (CLASS), in partnership with the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) of the  Local Government Unit (LGU) of Iligan City, held a special event for persons with disability (PWD) called, “Compassion to Action: Celebrating Love and Inclusivity on Valentine’s Day for PWD” on February 14, 2024, at the MSU-IIT Mini-theatre.

The awareness campaign, with the theme “Recognizing diversity on abilities and encouraging a more inclusive mindset,” was joined by students, faculty, and staff. In her welcome address, Prof. Rohane M. Derogongan, Vice Chancellor for Student Services, stressed the importance of drawing narratives from PWD students and every stakeholder concerned to develop policies that will accommodate their needs. She also emphasized that the collaboration with PDAO signifies a shared commitment to building an inclusive community that goes beyond the University walls.

A comprehensive discussion on Understanding Persons with Disability was given by PDAO Head, Conchita A. Areola. Subsequently, a testimonial speech was also shared by a PWD student, Regino R. Pacot from BA Panitikan, who expressed that despite their experiences of discrimination, they still look at life from a positive perspective.

The University aims to foster an environment that caters to the varying needs of students and with the recent approval of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI) policy, Prof. Derogongan is hopeful that IITians will achieve and thrive more.
