MSU-IIT’s Dr. Gaudencio Petalcorin, Jr. and Ms. Jelli Grace C. Luzano flew to France last week to join the Observation Session for International Relations Officers of Philippine Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) that is designed to help capacitate participants for internationalization.

Petalcorin, the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development and concurrent head of the Office of International Affairs (OIA), and Luzano, OIA staff member, participated in the observation session, held at the University of Montpellier (UM), as MSU-IIT’s International Relations Officers.

The five-day activity, entitled UM Staff Week, was held at the centuries-old university in Southeastern France from September 30-October 4, 2019.

According to Petalcorin, the UM Staff Week was aimed at having member-universities of the ANTENA, an Erasmus+ project that is conducted in collaboration with the University of Alicante, Spain, and the UM, exchange best practices and broaden university networks.

It was also the venue for UM to share with the participating universities how UM-managed Erasmus+ projects were implemented.

MSU-IIT is one of 10 member-universities of the Erasmus+ ANTENA project. In the project, the member-universities are expected to lead and build the capabilities of other PHEIs in internationalization.

Previously, the Erasmus+ ANTENA Project had its first national Roundtable and Coordination Meeting held in Manila on July 15-16, 2019, which was attended by Petalcorin and Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol.

Workshops on collective intelligence and co-development were conducted during the UM Staff Week. Participants held group discussions on the importance of internationalization, and on how to implement strategies, and address internationalization challenges.

A speed networking event, participated by project leaders of UM’s other initiatives and Erasmus+ projects, was also conducted to create partnerships with other participants through short discussions.

UM’s Vice President for International Affairs, Dr. Patrick Caron, met with Petalcorin and Luzano and the other representatives of the different PHEIs to discuss their internationalization strategies and future directions.

The nine other PHEIs present there were the following -  University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila, Benguet State University, St. Louis University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Central Luzon State University, University of San Carlos, and Xavier University.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) sent also several of its officials and personnel.

Representatives of other universities in France, Spain, Hungary, and South Africa that manage other Erasmus+ projects also attended the activity.

Petalcorin, who is tasked to make MSU-IIT more internationally visible and competitive, impressed on the participants to the activity the importance of MSU-IIT’s active participation in internationalization, as well as in the ANTENA project.

“Our growth as a university in our international research, collaboration, and mobility has important implications in the growth of the community and higher education,” Petalcorin shared.
