MSU-IIT’s Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM) Director, Prof. Mylene Uy, delivered her talk entitled, “Harnessing Natural Products for Community Health in Mindanao: Unlocking the Potential of Traditional Medicinal Plants for Sustainable Healthcare Solutions,” during the Mindanao Regional Scientific Meeting (RSM) on March 26-27, 2025, at the Avior Hotel, General Santos City.
The RSM is the first in the series of 2025 RSMs organized by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), in partnership with the DOST Mindanao Cluster led by DOST XII (SOCCSKSARGEN).
With the theme, “Bioscience Innovations: Transforming Enterprise Ecosystems for Wealth Creation,” the Mindanao RSM assembled academicians, scientists, researchers, and industry professionals to discuss the transformative potential of bioscience in shaping enterprise ecosystems, driving social innovation, and enabling sustainable development.
A keynote address was delivered by Secretary Leo Tereo A. Magno, Chairperson of the Mindanao Development Authority, during the Opening Ceremonies. Four plenary sessions were held during the event.
Prof. Dr. Uy delivered her presentation during Plenary Session 4 with the theme “Bioscience for Inclusive Development: Empowering Communities with Innovations for Better Health.” In her talk, Prof. Uy emphasized how bioscience serves as a bridge between age-old traditions and modern healthcare innovations. She also highlighted the potential impacts of natural products on community health, which include Improved Healthcare Access, Economic Growth, Environmental Conservation, and Cultural Preservation.
She rallied the Mindanaons to work together to unlock the full potential of traditional medicinal plants for a healthier, more sustainable future.
