MSU-IIT secures ANU grant to boost Mindanao research and publication capacity

Mar 03 2025

The Australian National University (ANU) Philippines Institute has awarded a $10,000 AUD grant to Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), through Dr. Primitivo III Cabanes Ragandang, Research Dissemination Director and faculty member of the Department of Political Science of the College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The funding will support a two-day intensive workshop for 20 Early Career Researchers (ECRs) across Mindanao, equipping them with the necessary skills and mentorship to publish in international peer-reviewed journals and secure research grants.

The project, titled "Empowering Mindanao Scholars: Addressing Barriers to Research and Publication in Peace and Conflict Studies," responds to the longstanding challenge of underrepresentation of Mindanao-based scholars in academic publishing. Despite Mindanao being extensively studied due to its complex socio-political landscape, local researchers often face institutional barriers, limited mentorship, and challenges in accessing funding and international publishing platforms. This initiative aims to address these gaps by providing direct training, hands-on mentorship, and post-workshop support to help ECRs navigate the publishing and research funding process.

The workshop will feature renowned ANU scholars, Prof. Lemay Hébert and Prof. Bina D’Costa, who will lead sessions on academic publishing, decolonizing knowledge production, and grant writing. Participants will receive one-on-one mentorship, develop structured research abstracts, and gain insights into overcoming Western-centric publishing biases. Post-workshop, selected scholars will continue to receive mentorship from ANU experts to support manuscript revisions and submission to high-impact journals.

Scheduled between May and November 2025 at MSU-IIT, this initiative not only strengthens Mindanao’s research capacity but also fosters sustainable academic collaboration between ANU and Philippine institutions. The project’s findings and recommendations will be shared with the Commission on Higher Education, BARMM’s Ministry of Higher Education, and local universities to advocate for structural reforms supporting Mindanao-based research and knowledge production.
