The Policy Center for Human Rights and Sustainable Development (PCHRSD) of the Institute for Policy Innovation and Leadership (IPIL) concluded the first year of its initiative entitled ‘Developing a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Toolkit for MSU-IIT Students’ on January 16, 2025.
This project, generously funded by the University, aims to equip MSU-IIT students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The first year (2024) focused on laying the groundwork for the toolkit through two writeshops, which brought together faculty members and researchers from various academic disciplines within the university. This interdisciplinary collaboration enriched the toolkit, making it both inclusive and practical for student use.
Led by its resource person who was also one of the module writers, Dr. Adelfa Silor from the College of Education (CED), the first writeshop was done on August 29, 2024, at the University Boardroom.
Dr. Silor provided an in-depth presentation on designing an SDG toolkit tailored for adult learners, particularly in higher education. She shared various approaches to effectively translate SDG topics into practical classroom activities and community engagement initiatives.
Dr. Silor also highlighted the importance of research as a key output of the toolkit, encouraging the inclusion of research-based learning strategies. During the open forum, participants discussed key elements of the toolkit, including its focus on activity-based learning, the need for more infographics to cater to visually inclined learners, and the categorization of extension activities for the 17 SDGs to reflect their interconnectedness. Participants also presented their initial drafts, which were reviewed and refined during the session.
The second writeshop, conducted on January 16, 2025, at the Conference Room introduced a shift in the toolkit direction. Dr. Josefina Tabudlong from the Department of Sociology proposed replacing the toolkit with a visually engaging primer or coffee table book that would better align with contemporary learners’ preferences. Her lecture centered on the concept of conscientization, frameworks, and approaches for mainstreaming the SDGs, along with a simplified content template comprising four sections: Context, Reflection/Analysis, Application, and Evaluation. The writers utilized this template for their assigned SDGs during the writeshop and presented their drafts for feedback.
Additionally, the session featured an inspirational message from the University Chancellor, Alizedney M. Ditucalan, who commended the participant’s dedication to advancing sustainable development through education.
With the conclusion of year one, the project transitions into its second year in 2025. The primary focus will be on completing the primer layout through integrating cartoon characters, content revisions, and printing, followed by dissemination to students and stakeholders.
This initiative emphasized MSU-IIT's commitment to fostering sustainable development and empowering its students to become agents of change. By creating a visually appealing and activity-oriented primer, the project aims to continue to inspire action and cultivate an understanding of the interconnected challenges and opportunities of the SDGs.
