Faculty members from MSU–Iligan Institute of Technology were invited to speak at an international seminar on academic integrity hosted by Khon Kaen University in Thailand. The seminar, held on January 13-14, 2025, at the Park Plaza Hotel in Bangkok, brought together representatives from various universities across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and some universities in New Zealand and Australia.
The primary objective of the seminar was to foster a network of universities within ASEAN, aiming to collaboratively develop an ecosystem that promotes and upholds the highest standards of academic integrity.
The discussions were wide-ranging and included critical issues related to academic integrity. Attendees explored contemporary challenges such as plagiarism, research misconduct, and the ethical use of technology in academia. Furthermore, the seminar also tackled the crucial role of institutional policies, educational initiatives, and fostering a culture of honesty and integrity among students and faculty.
Representing MSU-IIT were Atty. Eddie Bouy B. Palad, Director of the Research Integrity and Compliance Office, and faculty members from the Department of Political Science, Dr. Elaine M. Baulete and Dr. Sittie Akima A. Ali who attended the seminar in Bangkok; while Dr. Hazel D. Jovita-Olvez attended online via Zoom.
Atty. Palad, a leading voice in research ethics, presented MSU-IIT's innovative approaches to combating research misconduct, emphasizing the institution's commitment to upholding the highest standards of academic integrity. Dr. Baulete and Dr. Ali contributed valuable perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for promoting academic integrity in diverse educational contexts within the ASEAN region.
The MSU-IIT delegation actively engaged in fruitful discussions with colleagues from other institutions, exchanging best practices and exploring potential areas for future collaboration. This invaluable exchange of knowledge and expertise will undoubtedly strengthen the efforts of each institution to cultivate a culture of academic integrity within their respective campuses and contribute significantly to the overall advancement of higher education in the ASEAN region.
This international platform provided a valuable opportunity for MSU-IIT to share its expertise in academic integrity and contribute to the ongoing dialogue on enhancing academic standards across the ASEAN region.
