With the support of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs, teachers from different Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) attended a training on Trends in Technology for Teaching and Learning organized by the Department of Professional Education, College of Education on November 11, 2023, at ICT Laboratory, CED Building.

The participants included college teachers; 1 from Iligan Capitol College, 2 from St. Peter’s College (Iligan City), 2 from St. Micheal’s College (Iligan City), 4 from Iligan Medical Center College, 1 from Santa Monica Institute of Technology, 1 from Mindanao State University-Main (Marawi City), 1 from MSU-Naawan, 2 from MSU-Maigo School of Arts and Trades, 1 from University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP)-Main Campus, 2 from Southern Philippines College (Cagayan de Oro City), 1 from Northern Bukidnon State College, 1 from La Salle University (Ozamis City), and 1 from Misamis University (Ozamis City).

The activity kicked off with a welcome address given by the chairperson of the Department of Technology Teacher Education Dr. Roque Requino representing the Office Dean of the College of Education. This was followed by an inspirational message from the Vice Chancellor of Public Affairs Prof. Dr. Nancy Q. Echavez whose encouraging words were delivered by Ms. Sheena Gem A. Harum, MA, JD.

After setting up the rationale for the activity, the training traversed through 3 relevant topics revolving around (1) The SAMR Model, (2) Designing Effective Multimedia Instruction, and (3) Innovative Assessment Tools.

The first topic was presented by Dr. Shelanee Theresa P. Ruales as she emphasized, “The categories of the SAMR Model are fluid rather than rigid levels and integrating technology in the classroom should be based on learning context”. The participants also learned some criticisms of the model such as the lack of systematic evidence, and no accommodation of context.

Dr. Jun Karren V. Caparoso started the next lecture by clarifying the meaning of multimedia and how it can be operationally defined in educational contexts. He also highlighted the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and the Cognitive Load Theory to answer the question, “How can teachers maximize learning in multimedia instruction?” During the workshop, the participants were allowed to design technology-driven lessons in the light of Mayer’s 12 Principles of Multimedia Instruction.

For the third topic, Dr. Lowell G. Lucero guided the participants on how assessment activities can be enhanced by using digital tools such as Zip Grade and Plickers. The participants were excited when they had first-hand experience answering classroom-like activities using the said technology tools. They also had the opportunity to create online assessment tasks for the subject area they are currently teaching. Moreover, the participants took turns to present the outputs they made from each workshop.

The program ended with the closing remarks from the chairperson of the Department of Professional Education Dr. Ciedelle N. Grageda stressing the role of the college as a Center of Excellence in Teacher Education.

“Being a Center of Excellence in Teacher Education, we take the responsibility to share our knowledge and practices with other Teacher Education Institutions,” she noted.

Finally, Dr. Grageda thanked the participants for their active involvement in the training.
