MSU-IIT and UMY forge partnership for joint Master鈥檚 program in Foreign Language Teaching and Studies

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – October 10, 2024 – In a significant step towards international academic collaboration, the College of Arts and Social Sciences of MSU-IIT, Philippines and the Faculty of Language Education of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia convened to discuss the development of a joint degree Master’s program in Foreign Language Teaching and Studies. The meeting took place at Gedung Djarnawi Hadikusuma, UMY and was attended by esteemed lecturers and deans from both institutions.
The discussions focused on crafting, planning, and implementing a comprehensive curriculum that will enhance the teaching of foreign languages in the region. Both universities recognize the growing demand for proficient language educators and aim to equip graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet this need.
“This partnership is an exciting opportunity for both institutions to leverage our strengths and expertise,” said Prof. Marie Joy D. Banawa, Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at MSU-IIT. “Together, we can create a program that not only addresses the local educational landscape but also fosters cultural exchange and collaboration.”
The successful meeting concluded with a commitment to finalize the program details, with plans to officially launch the joint degree offering in the upcoming academic year. The collaboration is expected to provide students with a unique cross-cultural learning experience, combining the educational philosophies and methodologies of both countries.
Dr. Eko Purwanti, Dean of the Faculty of Language Education at UMY expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of the program. “This initiative represents a significant advancement in language education and will empower future educators to excel in a diverse linguistic environment.”
As the institutions move forward, they will work together to establish the curriculum, faculty exchanges, and joint research initiatives, all aimed at enhancing the quality of foreign language education in both the Philippines and Indonesia.
