Young MSU-IIT innovators excelled at the Swiss Innovation Prize Competition 2024, held from November 19 to 22, 2024 at Somerset Central in Makati City. With a focus on promoting innovation inspired by Swiss practices, the event featured top students from across the Philippines, tasked with developing sustainable solutions for societal benefits and showcased projects across three streams: Digitalization, Sustainability, and Prosperity.
MSU-IIT students - Tristan E. Listanco from the College of Computer Studies, Princess Myer V. Fajardo from the College of Engineering, and Sittie Hafsa L. Mamangcao from the College of Economics, Business and Accountancy - showcased the project “Zeolite Innovations: An Advanced Water Filtration with Integrated IoT Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring System” under the Digitalization stream.
They were the only team from Mindanao and the youngest among the finalists in this year's Swiss Innovation Prize Competition 2024.
Guided by mentors Asst. Prof. Apple Rose B. Alce and Engr. Ralf Ruffel Abarca, the team achieved third place under the Digitalization stream and earned accolades for their innovative solution implementing environmental and economic sustainability.
The awarding ceremony highlighted their significant achievements, including a PHP 30,000.00 prize and further opportunities for growth through mentorships and business exposure, marking another milestone in fostering a culture of innovation in the Philippines.
Just this year, Listanco and Fajardo also won the Outstanding Science and Technology Innovation Award at the ISPARK International Pitching Competition 2024, with the same project.
The duo, with Isha Angel Pondang, BS Mechanical Engineering also placed among the top 25 finalists at the UNESCO Water Resilience 2023: Youth Action for Water, and Top 7 International Finalists at the UNESCO Water Resilience 2024: Road to Bali, with another project called AquaGuardian, that is now being implemented within the lush expanses of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, and addresses critical water issues faced by the indigenous Tagbanua Tribe of Barangay Irawan.
