On December 6, 2024, the College of Health Sciences (CHS) at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), in collaboration with the MSU-IIT WECARE Office and the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) of Iligan City, successfully hosted the “KASADYA DAY: Celebrating Abilities and Embracing Diversity among PWDs.” This event was part of the Hinabang, Opportunidad, Paglaum, Edukasyon (H.O.P.E.) Program and was held at the Barangay Poblacion Gymnasium in Iligan City.
The event attracted around 350 to 400 participants, including MSU-IIT CHS faculty, PDAO staff, PWDs from various barangays, local dignitaries, other guests, and CHS Level 3 Nursing students who assisted with tasks such as taking vital signs.
The program began with an invocation led by Pastor Criselda C. Jarilla, followed by a welcome address by Councilor Samuel “Tatay” Huertas, represented by Ms. Charito Huertas Nadorra.
CHS Faculty and Extension Coordinator Associate Professor Jiddo Andrei Maranda delivered an inspirational message, while CHS Faculty Professor Roselyn M. Butalid provided an overview of the day’s activities and goals. Assoc. Prof. Vincent G. Tabil also introduced the special guests in attendance.
Hon. Mayor Frederick W. Siao, represented by Councilor Betsy Zalsos, gave a message of support and encouragement, while Pastor Jarilla shared a faith-based message focusing on hope and resilience for PWDs.
Conchita Areola, PDAO Head and H.O.P.E. Program Leader, along with Assoc. Prof. Gloria Shiela E. Coyoca of CHS, presented certificates and tokens to the participants. Prof. Coyoca followed up with a lecture on Hypertension and Health Awareness.
A highlight of the day was the series of contests, including a Christmas Caroling Contest, Slogan Making Contest, and a Painting Contest, all showcasing the talents of the PWD participants.
The winners of the Slogan Contest were:
3rd Place: Barangay Upper Tominobo with “The only true disability is the inability to accept and respect differences.”
2nd Place: Barangay Saray with “Don’t judge a disability by visibility.”
1st Place: Barangay Sto. Rosario with “Walay imposible nga dili nila kaya. Walay limit nato isip usa ka PWD.”
The event concluded with a final prayer and reflection led by Mrs. Charina L. Haynes. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was CHS Faculty Assoc. Prof. Mae-Lanie O. Poblete.
Kasadya Day was a meaningful celebration of abilities and diversity, fostering unity and understanding among PWDs and the broader community.
