MSU-IIT turns over Gender Inclusive Policy Brief to LGU-Iligan

MSU-IIT turned over the Gender-Inclusive Policy Brief titled “From Paper to Power: Bridging Gendered Policy Ideas and Practice” to the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Iligan City during a turnover ceremony on December 11, 2024, at the University Boardroom, gathering together the different offices of MSU-IIT that contributed to the making of this policy brief and LGU-Iligan representatives. 

Led by the Institute for Policy Innovation and Leadership (IPIL), alongside the MSU-IIT Gender and Development (GAD) Center, and Department of Political Science with contributions from its students and support from the LGU- Iligan City through the City Administrator’s Office,  Iligan City Youth Development Office, GAD Office, and the Sanggunian ng Kabataan Federation Office, this policy brief represents significant policies that address gender-sensitive issues. 

Hon. Councilor Atty. Marlene Young delivered the opening remarks and highlighted that this policy brief results from the collaboration, passion, and shared vision of addressing local challenges through a gender-sensitive lens. 

Project Leader, Asst. Prof. John Gieveson E. Iglupas, presented the rationale and shared that the need to present this evidenced-based policy brief to the LGU-Iligan will fulfill the very purpose of making it as it will aid and provide assistance in the legislative recommendations of the city. The project was designed in three stages– firstly, a Gender Lens Policy Brief Writeshop was done, followed by a Gender Lens Policy Brief Colloquium, and lastly, this turnover ceremony. The Political Science Department Chairperson, Prof. Hazel Jovita-Olvez, Ph.D., shared that this gathering is a milestone for the Department as this marked a realization of their varied expertise.

BA Political Science students of MSU-IIT, who are among the key authors of this policy brief, attended the event where representatives shared their collective thoughts on the project. For them, this was just more than a requirement, but rather a shared responsibility they ought to deliver for the betterment of the city. They are hopeful that the LGU-Iligan will continue supporting their initiatives.

The LGU-Iligan, through Hon. Marianito Alemania, Vice Mayor of Iligan City, responded with gratitude and acknowledged that this policy brief exemplifies the role of the youth in shaping policies that are inclusive and equitable. 

Newly designated Director of IPIL, Prof. Adrian P. Galido, Ph.D., closed the program with a presentation on  “Examining Digital Transformation Experiences in Local Government Units in the Philippines” and thanked the LGU-Iligan for their support in this endeavor.
