The College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) of MSU-IIT in partnership with Fakultas Pendidikan Bahasa (FPB) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) hosted an inspiring International Grand Lecture on October 14, 2024, at the 5th Floor of Djarnawi Hadikusuma Building, UMY, bringing together nearly 200 students from various language study programs.
The event, aimed at students in their fifth and sixth semesters who are currently developing their thesis projects, focused on navigating contemporary language learning trends and fostering cross-cultural connections.
The lecture featured two prominent speakers, each offering unique insights into the evolving landscape of language education. The first speaker, Dr. Jati Suryanto from UMY, addressed the challenges of teaching in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) world. Dr. Suryanto emphasized the need for educators to adapt their teaching strategies to better prepare students for the unpredictable global environment.
"Language learning is not just about vocabulary and grammar; it's about equipping students with the skills to navigate change and uncertainty," he remarked.
Following Dr. Suryanto, Dr. Irish Mae F. Dalona from the English Department of CASS explored the nuances of cultural differences, particularly between Asian cultures and those of the West. She underscored the importance of stimulating dialogue and discussion among students to foster a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives.
"Teachers play a critical role in creating an inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable expressing their cultural identities and engaging in meaningful conversations," Dr. Dalona stated.
The lecture concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, allowing students to engage directly with the speakers and discuss their own experiences in language learning and research, and cultural exchange. Many students expressed appreciation for the opportunity to reflect on their thesis topics in light of the discussions, finding new avenues for exploration.
The International Grand Lecture is part of Empowering Global Quality: Joint Efforts in Education, Research, and Community Service between MSU-IIT and UMY, a ten-day engagement that included classroom lectures by Dr. Dalona, Dr. Marie Joy Banawa, Dr. Danilyn Abingosa, and Assoc. Prof. Sittie Pasandalan to different courses at FPB, UMY.
