Dept. ng Filipino at Panitikan hosts a free webinar on research and instruction to empower Filipino language and literature聽

Launched in 2019 as an advocacy to address the needs of researchers and educators in promoting the cultural significance of Philippine languages and literature, the Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan (DFP) of the College of Arts and Social Sciences once again hosted Ani, a free webinar on research and instruction, on November 6, 2024.

Ani 2024: Ika-8 na Simposyum sa Pananaliksik at Pagtuturo ng Filipino at Panitikan explored the theme, “Digital Filipino: Transcending Technology Towards Research and Teaching Language and Literature” where scholars across the Philippines and abroad such as in the United Arab Emirates and Canada were brought together in a live stream on the official Facebook page of Ani. 

With the goal to support scholars, teachers, and students in contextualizing the Filipino language and literature in the field of instruction and research, this year’s Ani was headed by project leader, Asst. Prof. Loi Vincent C. Deriada. 

The webinar started with a message from the DFP Chairperson, Assoc. Prof. Danilyn T. Abingosa welcomed the guest virtually and formally introduced the main goal of the event. The Director of WE CARE, Prof. Rosario Reserva, and the Dean of CASS, Prof. Marie Joy D. Banawa, attended the opening program, showing their full support to DFP in doing great service to the public and in the community of educators and researchers. They expressed their presence and congratulated the department on strengthening the goal of the institute.

Experts in the disciplines of creative writing, linguistics, translation, and literature were invited. The discussions heavily revolved around the use of technology along with internationalization in the matter of teaching and conducting research in language and literature. 

Hannah A. Leceña of Philippine High School for Arts, Mt. Makiling, Los Ba艅os, Laguna discussed “Pagtuturo ng Malikhaing Pagsulat sa Panahong Digital”, focusing on the quality of instruction and strategies in teaching Creative Writing in the digital world; Johnel T. Lumacao, from Philippine Science High School, Southern Mindanao Campus discussed “Mga Paraan sa Pag-aaral ng Machine Translation” which highlighted the aspect of methods in doing research about machine translation; Prof. Janus Ruel T. Cabazares, a faculty member of UP Mindanao and a student of PhD Linguistics at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, shared about “Linggwistikang Antropolohiya sa Pilipinas sa Panahon ng Automatang Pangwika: Pagtalakay sa Ilang mga Direksyong Tinatahak ni Paul Kockelman,” highlighting the research on anthropological linguistics; the last speaker of the session was Gretchen Lyn Shien Ramas-Gabutan from Tangub City, National High School where she shared about (Bis) di (Dak) tika: Pagtawa Bilang Protesta, tackling about research in literature using the Bisaya Funny Quotes that reflect the reality in the society.  

Through Ani, the DFP will continuously serve the community by sharing knowledge with all educators and scholars across Mindanao and around the Philippines in the advancement of Filipino language and literature in academic and research settings.
