The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Cluster of MSU-IIT NSTP-CWTS, led by Dr. Allan Pabelic, successfully spearheaded an event that highlights the crucial role of women in disaster-preparedness and emergency response in celebration of National Women’s Month and Fire Prevention Month on March 16.
With 99% of the participants being female students, the initiative aimed to break gender stereotypes in crisis management by equipping them with essential life-saving skills. Joining Dr. Pabelic in leading the activities were Mr. Cyril Naigal, Mr. Ricardo Librado, Sgt. Eddie Toring, Mr. Daven Herodias, and Dr. Michael Art R. Napoles, who guided participants through hands-on training to build their confidence in responding to emergencies.
The event featured a rappelling activity, a seminar on Fire Safety and Prevention, and an actual fire extinguisher operation drill, allowing participants to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Women, often seen as secondary responders in emergencies, took the lead in engaging in these exercises, proving their capability to act swiftly and effectively in times of crisis.
In observance of Fire Prevention Month, the training placed a strong emphasis on fire safety awareness, particularly in households, workplaces, and communities where women play a significant role in risk mitigation. Mr. Herodias led the fire extinguisher operation drill, ensuring that participants gained hands-on experience in handling fire emergencies.
By equipping women with emergency response skills, the initiative strongly supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Encouraging more women to take part in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) enhances community resilience and preparedness, contributing to safer and more inclusive societies. Through this initiative, MSU-IIT reaffirms its commitment to empowering women, promoting inclusivity, and fostering a culture of proactive disaster management, ensuring that preparedness knows no gender.
