MSU-IIT’s NSTP organizes women-led mangrove planting and coastal clean-up drive

Mar 25 2025

On March 23, 2025, the National Service Training Program (NSTP) of Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), in collaboration with the Gender and Development Center (GADC), the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs (OVCPA), and Barangay Hinaplanon, Iligan City spearheaded a transformative activity titled “Kababaihan, Katilingban ug Kinaiyahan: Mangrove Planting and Coastal Clean-up” at the city’s Bayug River Delta in celebration of National Women’s Month.

This activity highlighted not only the importance of restoring degraded ecosystems, but also the critical role of women in environmental conservation.

“When we empower women to lead in environmental action, we don’t just save our ecosystems—we transform communities,” said Mr. Jaypee S. Yongco, the Environmental Cluster Head of NSTP who led this green initiative.

In coordination with NSTP in the activity was Kagawad Rio Gonzaga, the focal person of Barangay Hinaplanon. The activity successfully mobilized local volunteers, students, and barangay officials in a unified action to rehabilitate the mangrove ecosystem and to clean the vital coastal area. 500 mangrove propagules were planted during the drive.

With a focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the activity directly contributes to:

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality, by promoting inclusive participation of women in ecological initiatives;
  • SDG 13: Climate Action, through community-based mitigation efforts; and
  • SDG 15: Life on Land, by preserving and rehabilitating mangrove habitats that are essential for biodiversity and coastal resilience.

The success of the activity reinforces MSU-IIT’s dedication to community engagement, sustainability, and inclusive development. As this partnership between the university and Barangay Hinaplanon continues to grow, so does the vision of a greener, more resilient future—where women are not just participants, but leaders of change.
