Students from the Department of Economics at the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) brought honor to the institution as they presented their research papers at the prestigious 47th Annual Federation of ASEAN Economic Associations (FAEA) Conference held at the Emerald Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand last January 22, 2025. This year’s conference was organized by the Economic Society of Thailand (EST).
The MSU-IIT delegation included Ms. Kylla Rejiel M. Bag-ao from the BSBA Business Economics and Ms. Dina Jane L. Pasilona from the BS Economics program, accompanied by Asst. Prof. Resa Mae C. Laygan.
The year’s conference carries the theme: “Sustainable Transformation of ASEAN Economies Under Major Challenges: Climate Change, Geopolitical Conflicts, Digital Technology, Aging, and ASEAN Centrality,” which highlighted various research addressing these issues.
Ms. Pasilona showcased their paper titled, “A Cross-Country Analysis of the Effects of Digitalization on Money Laundering.” This paper is co-authored by Paullah Johannah Leopoldo, Donnaleen Mingo, Bridget Recososa, Asst. Prof. Martha Joy Abing, Asst. Prof. Charlyn Capulong, Asst. Prof. Resa Mae Laygan, and Prof. Maria Rizalia Y. Teves.
On the other hand, Ms. Bag-ao presented, “An Analysis on the Influence of Eco-Innovation on Climate Change Risk in Asia and Europe,” co-authored by Michaella Abing, Abdul Wahid Talib, Beverlyn Alucilja, Nurnaharah Pundogar, Asst. Prof. Resa Mae Laygan, Asst. Prof. Charlyn Capulong, Asst. Prof. Martha Joy Abing, and Prof. Maria Rizalia Y. Teves.
The conference brought together leading economists, scholars, and policymakers from across the ASEAN region to discuss pressing economic issues and share innovative solutions.
“It was an eye-opening, fun, and memorable experience for me. Meeting new people from different countries with similar interests, discussing those topics, and learning new things from them is what makes this trip/experience worth it and unforgettable,” said Bag-ao.
Pasilona added, “Everything is of Him who shows mercy. Having our paper accepted at such a prestigious conference was a blessing. Getting to present it and connect with the prominent economists was a privilege untold— an incredible opportunity to learn from them and grow.”
As Pasilona and Bag-ao return to MSU-IIT, they bring with them not only recognition for their research but also a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to share with their peers. Their achievement is a testament to the potential of young minds to make a significant impact on the field of economics.
