From just a classroom project to now a global phenomenon, Pic-A-Talk, an innovative app developed at the Department of Computer Science of the College of Computer Studies (CCS), is helping non-verbal individuals communicate using visual aids. The app has successfully reached an international user base, becoming the solution for those facing communication barriers.
The brainchild of Uma Louise Roa, alumna from MSU-IIT who finished her Computer Science (CS) degree in 2019, Pic-A-Talk began as a project for the CSC 181 course, under the mentorship of Prof. Orven E. Llantos, PhD. Recognized for its potential early on, Roa further enhanced the app for her thesis, with subsequent support from Prof. Haroun Al Raschid Christopher P. Macalisang.
The turning point for Pic-A-Talk came when it caught attention at the iDEYAHACK: Health Edition, hosted by MSU-IIT, propelling Roa and her team towards significant recognition and support. Now, the team includes CS graduates Lyn Albacete as Chief Technology Officer, Shealtiel Cañon as Chief Operating Officer, and recent graduate Andrei Tan.
Since its official launch, Pic-A-Talk has received numerous awards, including placements in prestigious competitions such as the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition and the GIST ASEAN. Most recently, it won the Female Founders Competition Asia Pacific 2024.
Pic-A-Talk has also forged valuable partnerships with speech therapy centers and educational institutions, broadening its impact. Further bolstered by strategic funding through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Start-Up Grant Fund, the app continues to expand its capabilities and outreach.
Designed to assist individuals with autism and speech delays, Pic-A-Talk's customizable platform allows users to express themselves through images and symbols. The app now supports multiple languages, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and global accessibility. Available on both iOS and Android platforms, it stands as a testament to the power of technological innovation rooted in academic projects.
“This success is beyond what I initially imagined. I am incredibly grateful for the endless support from MSU-IIT and my mentors,” said Roa, reflecting on this success.
Pic-A-Talk not only showcases the potential of student-led innovations but also highlights how technology can be used to make significant social impacts. For more details, visit their website at www.pic-a-talk.com.
