CCS promotes digital literacy and cyber security awareness among high school students

Mar 05 2025

In a proactive effort to enhance digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness, the College of Computer Studies (CCS), in partnership with MSU-IIT Coop Academy, successfully conducted the activity "Think Before You Click: Cyber Security Awareness" on February 26, 2025, at MSU-IIT Coop Academy under the extension project my.CyberSafe: Bridging Cyber Security and Education.

A total of 184 high school students actively engaged in discussions and interactive activities designed to deepen their understanding of cybersecurity risks and best practices. The program not only provided them with valuable knowledge but also encouraged responsible digital behavior in an increasingly interconnected world. This initiative also aimed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills to safeguard their devices, personal information, and online presence from potential cyber threats.

The activity featured insightful discussions from esteemed resource speakers who tackled crucial aspects of online safety and cybersecurity laws. Assoc. Prof. Mia Amor C. Tinam-Isan delivered an engaging session on "Staying Safe Online: Protecting Your Digital Footprints.” She emphasized the importance of maintaining a secure digital presence and reminded students that "Online safety is not a choice, it’s a responsibility.” Her discussion focused on practical strategies to prevent cyber threats, such as protecting personal data and recognizing online scams.

Following this, Atty. Eddie Bouy B. Palad provided an in-depth exploration of "Cyber Savvy: Decoding RA 10175". His talk shed light on the legal implications of cybercrimes and the importance of ethical digital conduct. He urged students to think critically before posting or sharing anything online, emphasizing that "The internet never forgets, so choose wisely, stay vigilant, and build a responsible digital footprint that reflects your best self and keeps you safe from cybercrime.”

The extension project was led by Asst. Prof. Paul B. Bokingkito Jr., while Atty. Eddie Bouy B. Palad was the visionary behind its conceptualization. The initiative was strongly supported by Dr. Rabby Q. Lavilles, Dean of CCS, alongside faculty members from the Department of Information Technology: Assoc. Prof. Mia Amor Tinam-Isan, Asst. Prof. Jerina Jean Ecleo, Asst. Prof. Jerame Beloy, Asst. Prof. Ma. Camilla Ann R. Llamas, Asst. Prof. Haron Hakeem Lua, and Asst. Prof. Nenen Borinaga.

The event was also supported by MSU-IIT Coop Academy School Principal, Hazel Bliss G. Mediodia, EdD, and School Administrator Maria Mirasol C. Lapinig, MPA. The success of the event was further made possible through the invaluable assistance of student volunteers from the Junior Information Technology Society (JITS), namely Omar Pulalon, Xela Jaianne Dela Peña, Kylah Marie Bulawin, and Kyla Fernandez.

This cybersecurity awareness initiative marks a significant step in preparing young digital users to navigate the online world safely. Through educational engagements such as my.CyberSafe, CCS reaffirms its commitment to shaping a digitally responsible and secure future for students.
