NSTP-CWTS plants 8,000 mangrove propagules at Bayug Island for National Environmental Awareness Month

In a remarkable display of environmental commitment, the National Service Training Program - Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS) spearheaded a mangrove planting and coastal clean-up activity at Bayug Island, Brgy. Hinaplanon, Iligan City on November 19, 2023. The event entitled, "Kababaihan, Katilingban ug Kinaiyahan: Mangrove Planting and Coastal Clean-up," marked the celebration of National Environmental Awareness Month.

Under the leadership of Mr. Jaypee S. Yongco and Sittie Akima Ali of the Environmental Cluster, students from the NSTP-CWTS & LTS actively participated in planting 8,000 mangrove propagules contributing to the preservation of the local ecosystem.

The primary goal of the initiative was to instill a sense of community service and social responsibility among the participants. Through hands-on activities like mangrove planting and coastal clean-up, the event aimed to foster an appreciation on the importance of protecting and preserving the environment.

This noble endeavor was made possible through a collaborative effort with various stakeholders, including the Local Government Unit of Barangay Hinaplanon, the Office of the National Service Training Program, the WE CARE Office, Gender & Development Center, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs.

Kagawad Rio Gonzaga of Barangay Hinaplanon expressed his delight at the students’ involvement in the activity.

"I am happy that students are involved in this activity, and I expect that there will be more of this activity in Bayug Island," Gonzaga stated.

Hayanna Balindong, a participating student, shared her perspective on the experience. She said that, "The activity was not only fun but also an eye-opener. I am glad that I had the opportunity to experience harvesting propagules and planting them, contributing to the restoration of our coastal ecosystem."

The successful event reflected the dedication of the NSTP in nurturing socially responsible and environmentally conscious citizens, leaving a positive impact on the community and promoting sustainable practices for the future.
